In light of the recent ruling regarding extreme intoxication, Canadians are wondering whether or not intoxication can be a valid defence in violent criminal acts.

The answer to this isn’t a simple yes or a no.

Generally, intoxication does not excuse a criminal act where the accused has the requisite intent. However, as Justice Wood famously stated in R v. Canute
